Importing a US Pickup: Will HMRC Accept the US Invoice?

Published 2 November 2026 ยท 6 min read

HMRC starts from the price you paid for a pickup, and the US invoice is the evidence. It only works as evidence if there is "no doubt about the document's authenticity" and it shows the total paid or payable. A Dodge Ram or Ford F-150 bought at auction, through a dealer, from a relative, or with options added afterwards can fail that test in different ways. This guide sets out where, using what GOV.UK says.

Large American pickups are imported for work and for pleasure, and the paperwork is the same as for any vehicle: a customs value, duty and VAT, then approval and registration. The value is where a pickup can go wrong, because the invoice often shows less than the whole price, or more than a fair one. We value the vehicle; Classic Import Co, a company we work with regularly, handles customs, NOVA and the DVLA paperwork.

What does HMRC use as the value of a pickup?

For most purchases, Method 1: the "price paid or payable by the buyer to the seller for the goods when they are sold for export to the UK", with transport and insurance up to the UK border added. GOV.UK says to use the seller's invoice, or the document the seller uses to ask for payment, as long as there can be no doubt about its authenticity and it shows the total paid or payable (GOV.UK, Method 1, read on 2 November 2026). For the general steps, see importing a car from the USA.

Where can the US invoice fall short?

Send the make, model, year, mileage and photos of the pickup, and we will confirm a price in writing before starting.

What about options, lift kits and accessories?

GOV.UK's page on paying VAT and duty says VAT is charged on the total cost of the vehicle plus any accessories you bought with it, delivery and extra charges, and customs duty. A pickup that ships with a bed cover, wheels or a suspension kit bought with it therefore carries that cost in the VAT. Parts fitted after import are a different matter, and we do not give advice on which stage a given item falls at. Ask your customs agent, and keep the receipts.

Does the duty rate differ from a car's?

GOV.UK says the rates you pay depend on the type of vehicle and where you are importing it from, and tells you to check with your shipping company, customs agent or the HMRC helpline. A pickup may sit under a different heading from a passenger car, so ask your agent which category yours falls in before you compare quotes. We do not quote the rate here, because it depends on the vehicle and the origin.

What happens if HMRC questions the value?

GOV.UK says that if HMRC suspects the declared value is not the total paid or payable, it asks for more information and reviews it. If it still has doubts, it says why, in writing if you ask, and you have reasonable time to reply before a final decision. If you disagree, you must tell HMRC within 30 days of the date of its letter and explain why. You must keep the documents for at least 4 years.

Where does a valuation fit in?

We value the pickup; we do not make customs declarations or decide which method HMRC accepts. A written valuation gives an independent figure with comparable vehicles behind it, which can help where the invoice is missing, partial or questioned. Whether HMRC accepts it is its decision. The import tax calculator on Classic Import Co shows the tax on a given value, and our guide to registering an imported vehicle with the DVLA covers the step after the tax.

Frequently asked questions

Does HMRC accept the US invoice for an imported pickup?

GOV.UK says to use the seller's invoice or payment request as evidence if there can be no doubt about its authenticity and it shows the total amount paid or payable. If HMRC doubts the declared value, it asks for more information before it decides.

Is the duty on a Dodge Ram or Ford F-150 the same as on a car?

GOV.UK says the rates depend on the type of vehicle and where it is imported from. A pickup may fall under a different heading from a passenger car, so ask your customs agent or the HMRC helpline.

What if I was given the pickup?

Method 1 needs a sale. GOV.UK lists gifts as cases with no sale, so Method 1 cannot be used and the next valuation methods are tried in order.

Need a value HMRC can look at?

Send the details and photos. We confirm the cost first, and the written valuation, with the comparables set out, is usually with you the same day.
