Is an Online Car Valuation Accepted in Divorce Court?
An online car valuation is a supporting document, not expert evidence. Under rule 25.4(2) of the Family Procedure Rules nobody can put expert evidence "in any form" before the family court without its permission, and Form E asks for a car over £500 but does not ask for a valuation of it.

What do the court rules say about expert evidence?
Part 25 of the Family Procedure Rules controls expert evidence in financial cases. Three points matter here:
- Rule 25.4(2): a person "may not without the permission of the court put expert evidence (in any form) before the court".
- Rule 25.4(3): the court gives that permission only if it is of the opinion that the expert evidence is necessary to assist the court.
- Rule 25.3: an expert's duty to help the court overrides any obligation to the person who instructed them.
Because the words are "in any form", do not assume a valuation report can simply be attached to a court filing. Ask your solicitor first, because whether a particular document counts as expert evidence is a question about your case, not one we can answer for you.
What does Form E need for a car?
Less than people expect. Form E asks in section 2.8 for personal belongings individually worth more than £500, including cars at "gross value". Its schedule of documents to attach lists valuations for the matrimonial home, other property, life policies, business interests and pensions. There is no line for a car valuation, so the figure is yours.
It still has to be a figure you can stand behind. The form says its content must be confirmed by a statement of truth, and that proceedings for contempt of court may be brought against a person who makes a false statement in a document verified by one. That is the main reason to base your figure on evidence, not on the first number you find.
What is an online or desktop valuation for?
It gives both sides an independent, documented number while a case is at the stage of negotiation, disclosure or mediation, which is where most car valuations in a separation are needed. Ours is prepared from your photographs and declared details, checked against comparable cars on the market, with each adjustment written into the report. Nobody attends the car, which helps when access is difficult. The wider case for this is in our guide to car valuation for divorce in the UK.
What if the court wants an expert?
Where two or more parties wish to put expert evidence before the court on an issue, rule 25.11 says the court may direct that it is given by a single joint expert, and if the parties cannot agree who, the court can select the expert. That is a formal instruction with its own requirements, and it is not what we provide. If you are told to expect one, your solicitor arranges it.
If a supporting valuation is what you need, send the make, model, mileage and photos.

You cannot make anyone change their own Form E figure. You can put a documented figure next to theirs, with the comparable cars and adjustments written down, so that anyone reading it can see why one number is better supported. A valuation that shows its working is much harder to dismiss than a handful of adverts, which show asking prices and ignore your car's mileage and condition. For how a report holds up, see what makes a valuation report defensible, and for why a quick automated figure falls short, why instant online valuations don't work. What it costs is in how much a car valuation for divorce costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is an online car valuation accepted in a divorce?
For negotiation, mediation and financial disclosure between the parties, an independent written valuation is commonly used. It is not expert evidence. Before you attach any valuation to a court filing, ask your solicitor, because rule 25.4(2) covers expert evidence in any form.
Do I have to attach a car valuation to Form E?
No. The form's schedule of documents to attach lists valuations for property, life policies, businesses and pensions, but not for cars. You give your own figure for any car worth more than £500.
Can a desktop valuation be used instead of a court expert?
No. If the court directs expert evidence, that is a separate formal instruction, often a single joint expert under rule 25.11. A desktop valuation does not replace it.
