Buying a Car in the UK to Export: Are You Paying Too Much?

Published 6 October 2026 · 6 min read

You find out if a UK asking price is fair by comparing it with what similar cars have actually sold for, adjusted for year, mileage, specification and condition. An independent valuation does that comparison for you and puts it in writing before you pay. The free government checks, the DVLA record and the MOT history (for tests since 2005), confirm the car is what the seller says it is, but neither tells you what it is worth.

If you are buying from abroad, or buying to ship the car out of the UK, you may never stand next to it before the money goes. That makes the price the one thing worth checking twice.

How do you know if a used car is overpriced?

You compare it with cars that are genuinely alike. Same model and engine, a similar year and mileage, the same specification and a similar condition. Two things catch buyers out. An advert shows an asking price, not the price a car sold for, so a page of adverts tells you what sellers hope to get. And small differences move the figure: the Financial Ombudsman Service, which reviews disputes about car values, says differences in mileage or year of registration "can have a big effect on the value".

A fair price is therefore a range built from comparable sales, then moved up or down for this car: its mileage against the average, its service history, any accident repairs or modifications, and the colour and options buyers pay more or less for. That is the work a valuation does, and it is the part that guides on buying a used car tend to leave out: Citizens Advice's buying guide, for example, tells you to haggle but not how to tell what the car should cost.

What do the free DVLA and MOT checks tell you, and what don't they?

They confirm identity and history, not value. With only the registration number, the DVLA vehicle enquiry service shows the vehicle tax status, when the MOT expires, the date of first registration, the year of manufacture, engine size, fuel type, CO2 emissions and the export status. The MOT history service shows whether each test was passed or failed and the mileage recorded at each one, for cars tested since 2005. A mileage that drops between two tests is a reason to stop and ask.

GOV.UK's checklist for buying a used vehicle adds the log book checks: the V5C should have a "DVL" watermark, its serial number should not fall in the ranges GOV.UK lists as possibly stolen, and the vehicle identification number and engine number should match the car. None of these shows whether money is still owed on the car. Citizens Advice says a private vehicle history check, costing up to £20, covers that.

Buying to ship abroad? Send us the listing, the registration number and the photos, and we tell you, in writing, what the car is worth against comparable sales before you pay.

Why does the price matter more when the car is leaving the UK?

Because the usual safety nets are further away. A buyer who lives near the seller can view the car twice, bring a friend and walk away. A buyer abroad often decides from photos, pays, and then adds shipping on top. Once the car is on its way, a price that was too high is very hard to put right. A written valuation before payment gives you a figure to negotiate with, or a reason not to go ahead.

Can the car be valued without seeing it, or in person?

Both. From the listing, the registration number, the recorded mileage and clear photos (each side of the car and the odometer), we can compare it with similar cars and set out the adjustments. When photos are not enough, for instance on an older car, a rare specification or one where condition makes most of the difference, we can value the car in person. Either way you get the comparables and the reasoning in writing, so the figure can be checked rather than taken on trust.

What does a pre-purchase valuation not cover?

It tells you what the car is worth. It is not a mechanical inspection, and it is not a history check: it does not tell you whether there is outstanding finance, whether the car has been recorded as stolen or written off. Use the GOV.UK checks above and a private history check for those, and a mechanic if you want the car's mechanical condition assessed.

What happens with DVLA when the car leaves the UK?

If the car is going abroad for 12 months or more, DVLA has to be told. GOV.UK calls this permanent export: the keeper fills in the "permanent export" section of the V5C log book, detaches it and sends it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD, and keeps the rest of the log book, which is needed to register the car in the country it is going to. The DVLA vehicle enquiry service shows a car's export status, so it is also worth checking that the car you are buying has not already been marked as exported.

What do we need from you?

The link to the listing and the asking price, the registration number, the VIN, the mileage, and photos of each side of the car and the odometer. Add the service history and anything the seller has told you about repairs or modifications. If you would like the car seen in person, tell us where it is. We confirm the price of the valuation in writing before any work begins.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price in an advert what cars like it actually sell for?

No. An advert shows the seller's asking price, not the price the car sold for. A fair figure comes from what comparable cars have actually changed hands for, adjusted for year, mileage, specification and condition.

Can you value a car I have not seen?

Yes. We can value it from the listing, the registration number, the mileage and clear photos, or we can see the car in person when photos are not enough to judge it. Either way, the comparables and adjustments are set out in writing.

Does a valuation check if the car has outstanding finance?

No. A valuation tells you what the car is worth, not whether money is still owed on it. Citizens Advice says a private vehicle history check, costing up to £20, shows whether the seller still owes money on the car.

Do I need to tell DVLA if the car is going abroad?

Yes, if it is leaving the UK for 12 months or more. GOV.UK calls this permanent export: the keeper fills in the permanent export section of the V5C, sends it to DVLA in Swansea and keeps the rest of the log book to register the car abroad.

Not sure the asking price is right?

We value the car against comparable sales, from photos or in person, and set out the reasoning before you pay for it.
